They're aerating in December?!

I'm sure we will get some crazy looks over the next week or so when people see or read that we decided to aerate our greens in December. First I'll explain the why and then the what.

WHY: Just like you and I, grass needs air to survive. Now obviously grass breathes through the leaf blades but the roots also need air to perform their duties. The roots are essentially the lifeblood of the plant, without roots the plant will not absorb nutrients or water for growth. Basically the healthier the roots, the healthier the plant. Throughout the season with every single footstep, cart traffic and maintenance traffic the soil begins to compact. When the soil compacts we lose porosity, thus reducing air in the soil. By reducing pore space we will limit the capabilities of root development and possibly cause a reduction in root mass. As stated earlier, roots are essential to the plant and if we start to lose roots we start to lose turf. Another issue with compacted soil is we being to lose the soils natural drainage capabilities. Pore space allows for water to penetrate into and through the soil. The more porous the soil, the better it will drain. If we have a soil that drains poorly we will begin to see saturated conditions. With saturated conditions we will have no air in the soil, which once again is bad for turf. Also, if the soil is saturated we create a situation where microorganisms cannot breathe and do their thing in the soil, ie; breaking down thatch and we all know how bad thatch is! So by performing procedures that increase the porosity of the soil we will begin to improve drainage, activity of microorganisms and overall turf health. I am not sure if many of you have noticed, but we have changed the frequency of some cultural practices since my arrival. Rolling frequency has increased dramatically to provide smoother ball roll. With this increase we will begin to increase compaction to the soil over time as the roller is essentially designs to squish the plant down. I have found this procedure only effects the top 1/2" of the profile and on occasion needs relief, so now I'll go onto the what we decided to do about this.

WHAT: Today we began to pencil tine our greens to improve the porosity of the soil. The tines are 1/4" in diameter and are 1" apart with a 3" spacing at a depth of 2.5". This setup allows for maximum efficiency while still providing good aeration to the soil. This process is immediately followed by the green being rolled and pin changed to recreate a smooth putting surface. Once the process is completed the green is back to rolling true with only pin sized holes remaining on the surface. Each green takes approximately 45 mins to complete.

Closures and temporary greens

In total in the past 48 hours we've received approximately 4.3 inches (2.2 Monday night and 2.1 Tuesday night) and that's not including the 1-2 inches of snow that melted from the weekend. With the recent large volumes of precipitation and the lack of subsurface drainage the course is literally saturated.

When it comes to the greens, they are our bread and butter so to speak. We must ensure we are not doing any long-term detriment to them by opening them prematurely after such torrential rains. If we open saturated greens the foot traffic alone will cause substantial compaction. This compaction will weaken the turf and if left uninterrupted we will begin to lose turf in areas. Most of the greens drain fairly quickly, while we have a couple of poorly draining greens such as 3, 10 and 12 that take a substantially longer time to drain. Cultural practices such as traditional aeration, deep tine aeration and addition of drainage will long-term help alleviate these issues. In the short-term, we appreciate your cooperation in playing to temporary greens and when moving onto the next hole, please avoid walking on the closed green.

The 8th hole today was completely closed due to the soil being completely saturated. Long-term we all understand drainage is an important part of correcting this issue along with core aeration and topdressing. In the mean time we are working on creating a pad with a mat and pathway leading to it for winter play. The hole will play approximately 130 yards to the center of the green. We ask all golfers remain on the path on this hole and try and keep off the saturated fairway for the same reasons as I spoke of above on the greens. Walking on saturated turf compacts the soil and weakens the turf. So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation, please keep on the path, hit from the mat and return to the path until you get to the green site.

Hole closures - why?

Recently we've had a bit of a cold snap causing some lengthy frost delays. On more than 1 occasion the frost was so severe that certain areas of the course never saw the frost lift. An example of an area where this may occur is the 7th hole. With the tall trees on the south side of the hole, blocking out sun, the frost can remain present all day. In a case such as this, the grounds team will post signage signifying the entire hole will be closed. The sole reason for this is turf health. We all understand that walking on a frosty green is detrimental to the turf, the same goes for shortly mowed turf such as approaches, fairways and tees. Here is a quote from my last update; "Turf is made up of 90% water and during periods of frost this water freezes in the cell causing the structure of the plant to be very brittle. If turf is walked on under these conditions the cell walls will shatter and can cause the plant much unneeded stress." By closing these few holes on the few days that frost remains present all day, we will have much healthier turf heading into the spring and arrive at peak conditions that much earlier. Our goal is to get every golfer out as soon as possible and playing as much golf on as many regular greens as possible. We just need to convince Mother Nature to cooperate.

It's a little earlier than I expected, but today we had our first frost delay of the season here at AR. With the beautiful sunny days and clear nights we've been having comes cool mornings that result in frosted turf. Turf is made up of 90% water and during periods of frost this water freezes in the cell causing the structure of the plant to be very brittle. If turf is walked on under these conditions the cell walls will shatter and can cause the plant much unneeded stress. If we walked on a green with frost it can cause irreversible damage and potentially kill the plant. #12 Drainage

Before the heavy rains begin we started the drainage project on the 12th approach. First I would like to address the fact that our approaches have accumulated a massive of thatch over the years. Continuous aeration and topdressing is necessary to provide the desired results that we are looking for. This will take some time to accomplish but year-to-year they will continue to improve. I've attached a photo to indicate the level of thatch we are currently dealing with on # 12.

The drainage itself will help alleviate excess water in the area by allowing a path for it to escape. The existing drainage that was present was completely clogged and basically useless. The new drainage is being installed with a 12" trench at a 2% slope and consists of socked 4" perforated Big "O" and back filled with straight sand. The trench in the rough portion will be seeded with a few "dams" put in to stop the sand from washing out. The trench through the approach will have the sod replaced for a quicker healing time. The drain should be thought of the main collector drain which will allow us to tie into it down the road to continue to improve this area. Many of our approaches that are bowl shaped such as this require similar drainage and will be addressed in the future. We did run into a few problems, ie stumps and irrigation, but feel we made great progress today. We are about 3/4's of the way through and it will be completed tomorrow.

The Satellite Bar & Grille at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club is up over $25,000 in restaurant food sales vs. 2009, which adds up to many additional patrons. “We attribute much of the growth from the fact that we’ve independently branded the restaurant, capital investment, outstanding food and the tie in to the local wineries”, says Food & Beverage Manager Michael Brown.

The Satellite Bar & Grille restaurant was branded separately from the golf course a couple years ago to help break down the stigma of being a “golf course restaurant” and non-golfer visits has increased dramatically as a result. New table tops, chairs, carpet and ambience fixtures were large capital investments showing a commitment to the vision of being a standalone restaurant not dependent on golfers. One thing that you won't expect when you first step onto Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, is a horse or a deer eating grass right on the green, especially because this is a community course. With the indoor tennis courts, sharing the golf course's parking lot, and the many people that are around, it would be kind of surprising to see the many deer that will appear on the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club.
Many things aren't what you'd expect coming from regular golf club. Arbutus Ridge has a restaurant that will serve you king crab claws and more at an affordable price that will get you wondering if you're even at a golf club. This kind of dining will get you too tired for golf. Plus, they have what is called an unofficial balcony hole that people can shoot off of as tradition.
Arbutus Ridge is a place where one can enjoy a number of things. Whether they are there just to have fun, hang out, grab a meal, go golfing, or just shoot the breeze, this is a place unlike any other course you've been to. The restaurant actually serves more non-golfers than golfers. It has been claimed to be the best restaurant in the town.
Arbutus Ridge is like a small town on Vancouver Island that is only 40 minutes from Victoria. It is a perfect stop for one who is out for a fish among other things. With what Arbutus Ridge Golf Club has to offer, it's surprising to find that it is not overrun by too many tourists. That is hoped to be changed soon.
The layout of the land isn't to bad, and you'll find most holes to be fairly simple, all but the last little bit. Par-3, 17th hole has water on three sides of the green with a lot of deer roaming around. Par-4, 18th hole, is 426 yards and one has to shoot straight uphill, hoping to get a decent second shot to the green that is well-guarded.
Like stated, Arbutus Ridge Golf Club is a place that you will thoroughly enjoy. Just be sure to not make any dinner bets on parring the No. 18 hole. You might end up losing the bet. That is common for many new comers to Arbutus Ridge who don't know about the 18th hole. If your 18th hole is bad, just sit back and laugh and enjoy the food.

June 29th 2010 Cobble Hill, BC – In the first round of the BC Women’s Amateur Championship at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, Christine Wong from the Quilchena Golf & Country Club shot an incredible round of 68, resulting in a new ladies course record.

On June 29th at 9:45am Christine Wong teed off the first hole of the BC Women’s Amateur Championship knowing that she stood a good chance of claiming the title. She had already qualified for the US Women’s Open Championship which begins next week. Little did she know that by the end of her round she would have 5 birdies, 12 pars and 1 bogey to shoot the new women’s course record at the challenging and scenic Arbutus Ridge Golf Club.

“What a spectacular round of golf”, says Arbutus Ridge General Manager Jason Lowe. “It is refreshing to see that the game of golf is alive and well in young women across the province. Arbutus Ridge Golf Club is heavily invested in growing the game of golf. The Arbutus Ridge Golf Club has collected 61 incredible bird action shots from around the golf course. Golfers and Birders alike will be amazed at the variety of birds and their integration into the golf course surrounding. “Birding is one of the fastest growing tourism sectors worldwide and we’d like to build this element into the golf experience including educational components”, says General Manager, Jason Lowe. Increased competition calls for increased differentiation
A primary market for the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club is Victoria. Two 18 hole golf courses have been added to this market in the last few years and another 18 hole course is opening in 2010. What to do? “Increased competition calls for increased differentiation, and new competition creates the need to invest more heavily into improving the products and services you offer”, says General Manager, Jason Lowe. “On Vancouver Island all the golf courses work together very well to bring in destination golfers, but you need to protect your market share anytime new products arrive. New fresh product usually brings more destination golfers, but also changes the supply and demand ratio for local golfers”, finishes Lowe. The Arbutus Ridge Golf Club has identified its competitive advantage along with ways to strengthen the advantage and add new elements that will distinguish the facility from the competition. “There’s lots involved in the process and knowing you can only do so much every year, we’ve really focused on sustainability as something we’d like to do better than any other facility on Vancouver Island and we’ve recently won an award for our efforts in that particular area”, says Lowe. In regards to service, the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club measures its performance on Guest Experience Surveys. 2009 proved to be the best year on record for these survey results, demonstrating that the culture and training at the facility are at an all time high.

Arbutus Ridge Golf Club gets aggressive for new Members!
A golf membership is the ultimate loyalty towards a given golf facility and Arbutus Ridge Golf Club is getting serious about retaining its members and getting new members. Their goal is to have most welcoming and vibrant membership on Vancouver Island by treating Members right and setting the tone for membership functions. Arbutus Ridge has solicited many other golf courses to ensure reciprocal rates are in place, going from just 11 agreements to 22 in the last two years. Arbutus Ridge is owned by the GolfBC Group and starting in 2010 all Arbutus Ridge Members will receive 50% off green fees at all the other GolfBC courses located in BC. Measuring the success of a business strictly on financial performance may not lead to long term sustainability for a business or properly measure its overall value. Measuring the value of a business based on Social, Environmental and Financial performance is both more holistic and incorporates more long term thinking. “At Arbutus Ridge we’ve starting documenting objectives and results for all three pillars which has helped with financial stability as well”, says General Manager Jason Lowe. “People may be surprised at some of the social value of a golf course, such as giving out 683 rounds to local charities, using golf as a fundraiser event, or cash donations where a company like GolfBC make donations to three main charities 1) Canadian Cancer Society 2) BC Children’s Hospital Foundation 3) St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation”, Lowe continues. How to build restaurant revenue at a golf course
The culinary and beverage experience as an integral part of the “golf day” can often be overlooked in its importance for pre or post golf, the revenue potential of non-golf visits can also be overlooked. Growing the Satellite Bar & Grille business at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club has produced great results; in fact 2009 was the best year on record for financial performance in this area. “It starts with breaking down the stigma of being a golf course restaurant, you need to have a separate brand for the dining experience”, says Food & Beverage Services Manager Michael Brown. “We know our primary market is the golfers, but we are growing the business by also giving secondary markets some effort, in fact we’ve hosted 3 Winemaker’s Dinners which is a natural when you’re directly surrounded by 9 wineries and we’ve joined the Wine Islands Vintners Association”, continues Brown. “You have to cover the basics at a golf facility for what your menu offers, but offer more upscale menu options to attract the foodies and non-golfers as well”, says Executive Chef Rick Davidson. “We look at our markets like a tree, grab the low hanging fruit first, but when you’re ready go for the fruit higher up on the tree know their needs and commit to it”, Davidson finishes. Records set for Family Golf Day & Junior Night Participants
84 people attended the Family Golf Day at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in 2009. This event has been held at all GolfBC owned and operated golf courses in BC for two years and Arbutus Ridge set an attendance record in 2009. “This is a fantastic GolfBC initiative to grow the game of golf and one of many programs we have in place, the video we created shows how much fun the event is and we look forward to another great event on June 6, 2010 at Arbutus Ridge”, says General Manager Jason Lowe.

Wednesday evenings are Junior Nights at Arbutus Ridge with 30-55 attendees, which boast one of the best consistent turnouts out of any Vancouver Island golf course Junior Program. The success of this program teamed with many others including the Family Golf Day has earned Arbutus Ridge Golf Club Golf Professional Jayme Young the Junior Promoter of the Year finalist distinction from the PGA of BC in 2009. “This year we are taking it one step further with a special Birthday Party Program for kids made possible by purchasing Snag Golf equipment”, says Director of Golf Jordan Ray.

Arbutus Ridge is hosting the prestigious 2010 BC Women’s Amateur/Mid Amateur Championship June 29-July 2. Since the spotlight will be on ladies golf during this event Arbutus Ridge is introducing Ladies Golf Week June 7-14th. “During this week leading up to the Provincial Championship we want to showcase Arbutus Ridge as the first choice for female golfers on southern Vancouver Island. The Arbutus Ridge Ladies Night every Monday is themed as wine, women & laughter and the Ladies Day group is very welcoming as well. Both groups have added something new this year by going on a road trip prior to their first weekly event to build the camaraderie even more.
